With the Southwest Regional Heat approaching fast (23rd June, be there!) the car is almost back together after the major overhaul that's been going on since we got back from Silverstone. The most striking new feature is the new slimline look,
This has been done to save both weight and rolling resistance and with a track of over 600mm should have a minimal practical effect on stability. Other weight/resistance savings have been made in the drive train. We have switched from two cantilevered axles to a single transaxle at the rear which has let us get rid of two bearings and their supports. We have also simplified our drive train by removing the CVT gearbox, replacing it with just a regular cassette hub to act as a lay shaft. This has saved us loads of weight and resistance but we do lose out on flexibility on the the track with only a single gear.
The brakes are now mounted on the front wheels. The regulations demand two wheels be independently braked so we have had to mount them up front. This means we take a bit of an aerodynamic hit but this is more than made up for by the weight savings at the back.
The car has also had an aesthetic spruce up with a new coat of paint and brand new decals, just to finish her off properly. There are still a few more tweaks and nudges left to do this afternoon but she should be ready for a pre-race shake down at the end of the day.
WOW!!! you have really worked wonders Darren, it looks awesome! Wish I could say the same for M6 but what can you do... Look forward to Thursday, gonna be tough up against you but will be a great day none the less, well done again.
ReplyDeleteThanks, although myself and Mr Beech have been busy with other projects at the moment so it's mostly been down to Mr Lloyd-king.
ReplyDeleteThere really is very little to do now, there is an issue with the new steering linkages which has made the steering far too heavy but we are on top of it and should be totally done by the end of the week. I'm really looking forward to Thursday!
Well done for Newquay, another great result to add to your collection, m6 didnt fair so well unfortunately. I was wondering looking at your new drive set up, do you have both back wheels solid to the axil or dose one free wheel offering a differential?
ReplyDeleteHey Dan, sorry about Newquay, we have had our fair share of disappontment in the past, especially last year, so I know how bad it can feel!
ReplyDeleteThe new transaxle we are using is fixed to the right wheel with a hub coupler with a keyway so thet the wheel spins with the axle. The left wheel then freewheels on the same axle using its own bearings. If you want to have a look then just drop me a line and I will arrange something.
Hi Darren, yeah Newquay was quite a downer but its all a learning curve. Disappointment is starting to become the norm with us now lol, even when we do have a good race theres always something niggling but I got a few things up my sleeve I think will help us greatly. The way I look at it is theres only so much bad luck I can have!
ReplyDeleteThats a good setup you got, I had a feeling it was something like that. My new build was going to have an axil setup similar but I've redesigned it now for much better simplicity and weight mainly.
I would love to come and see the car, I will drop you an email in the new term and we can try and sort something before I head back to uni if thats ok.
Some other news, we will be racing along side you at Castle Combe in October. I have a F24+ qualifier and the CSCC team will be racing the F24 as Newquay didnt go the way we had planned. If not before, see you then and enjoy the holidays!
